Writer’s Insight #1
Welcome one and all to my very first Writer’s Insight! This is the blog series where I talk about my personal insight into the world of writing from my perspective to give outside readers a look into what it is like being a writer.
The first topic that I’d like to talk about in this first iteration is the writing bug itself.
Think of the ‘writing bug’ like the theater bug or a travel bug. Except it has to do with writing.
I first got the writing bug when I was in middle school back in 2008-2009. It all started with my composition class in third period. We were told to get composition notebooks and mine was purple, and I still have it to this day to look back on. At the start of the period we were given writing prompts to work from.
These prompts started from personal prompts like what it was like the first day of school to fictional prompts like Mr. Linden’s Library. Every step of the way, I adored writing. This composition class quickly became my favorite class of the entire day and I never wanted it to end.
I found myself coming up with stories after class and writing my own fanfiction, posting it online on the now dead Quizilla. I wrote in several different notebooks and on the computer constantly when I had free time. My brain played out stories night and day and I enjoyed exploring where those stories would take me.
I was enthralled with the art of writing and found it to be one of the few things that I’ve had a genuine talent for. It was one of the few things that I was confident in and still am. My defining creative spark.
This bug has only grown and refined itself over the years. I went to a writers’ club in my freshman year of high school. I fell deeper and deeper in love with the craft and continued to delve deeper into it with original concepts and fanfiction and everything in-between. I explored different genres and still do.
I love the art of writing and the state that it allows me to work in when I am truly ‘in it to win it’. It is freeing and grounding at the same time for me.
I continued to write fanfiction and other stories and posting it online under a few different usernames while hiding it away from others around me unless it came to writing notes on cards for special occasions.
The bug transformed into a passion that I hold close to my heart.
DISCUSSION QUESTION(S):
Do you have the writing bug? If you do, how did you get it? If you don’t, what kind of bug do you have and how did you get it?
