The Fairy and Her Captain Chapter 13

The cool metal of the flask pressed to Killian’s lips gave the pirate some solace while he stared at the fae’s body as it laid still on his bed. He tipped his head back to allow the sweet nectar liquor to enter his mouth. He gave a few healthy gulps before he dropped his head, placing the flask between his legs, and resting it on the chair he sat on.

The numbing effect from the rum did little to dull the pain of losing Hazel. He twisted the cap closed on the flask and moved it under the chair. He leaned forward in the chair and rested his elbows on his legs. He reached his hand out to hold hers, but pulled it away at the last moment. He balled his hand into a tight fist and pressed it to his lips. The chill from the metal of his large rings produce a stark contrast to the heat the rum brought to his face.

He bit the edge of his lower lip. He couldn’t take his eyes from her form. Any moment, he expected her to sit up and say she was okay. Say that it was all a trick or an enchantment that she cast to fake her death. The black veins around her face, down her neck that disappeared into her green tunic, and along her exposed arms where her sleeves were rolled up, told him the opposite. All he wanted was for her to be okay. For her to be with him, but she was brought here. Whether or not it was of her own volition, he had no way to tell unless he could ask her himself.

“…Please come back to me….this was all my fault…” He choked out, feeling the tears well up in his eyes. Despite all his efforts to keep himself from crying, the tears fell down his cheeks. He moved to wipe them away and pressed his hand against his forehead afterwards. He hung his head low for a moment before returning his gaze to Hazel. “I should have just stayed with you on that bloody island. Because if I were there…you would still be alive.”

His tongue dragged along the edge of his bottom lip, more tears streaming down the side of his face. He picked up his flask and opened it up, pressing it to his lips. He tossed his head back and gulped the remainder of the rum inside. He dropped his head to look at her as he pulled the flask from his lips. He twisted the cap on and tossed it on the bed next to her. He rose to his feet as he recalled her wishes of what to do with her body.

She wished for a pirate’s burial at sea, to be tossed overboard the Jolly Roger to return to the ocean that she admired for so long. He always told her that there would be no need for such a thing. That he would find a permanent cure for the dreamshade poison and that she would continue to venture with him to all the realms to live a pirate’s life, with honor and good form.

He couldn’t bring himself to pick her up from the bed or touch the sheet that he would wrap her in. He stood at her bedside and moved a stray strand of blonde hair out of her face. The back of his curled index finger dragged along her ice cold cheek. His jaw clenched tightly as he hesitantly pulled his hand away. “…I can’t do what you want me to do, Hazel… I can’t. There just…has to be a way for you to return to me…I can’t…won’t… accept that you’re dead for good…There has to be something to return you to me….” He pleaded as his heart ached in his chest.

A knock on the door turned his attention away from Hazel’s body. “Can I come in, Hook?” The captain recognized that voice. It was Emma Swan. He cleared his throat and wiped his face with his sleeve. “C-Come in.” He called out.

The door to his quarters opened and Emma slipped in, closed the door behind her. “It’s been a couple of hours since you stormed out of Gold’s. …I figured that I would check up on you…see how you were doing.” She walked further into the room to stand beside Killian. She crossed her arms in front of her chest and turned her head towards him. She glanced between him and the female on the bed. “…I don’t want to pry, but you two seem like you were close. How did you two meet anyway? A fairy and a pirate captain. Seems like an unlikely pair.”

Killian nodded his head. “We were an unlikely pair, for sure.” He scratched the scruff on his face and sighed softly, letting his hand drop against his leg. “We met when my crew and I made the journey to an island called Pixie Hollow for pixie dust and a fairy to wield it seeing as I cannot wield magic myself. …She offered her servitude in exchange for the Blue Fairy’s life when we took her as a hostage. She said that she was a scout fairy and that she could benefit my crew. Which she did happily for centuries for a chance to travel the realms away from Pixie Hollow. She wanted to see all the realms.”

Emma continued to ask questions about her and the things that transpired between them. Killian went on to explain briefly of the progress she made with the sword and of the times they saved one another’s lives on Neverland. He told her all about the dreamshade poison and how Hazel had become afflicted with it. He told her of the price of the magic from the spring water, that leaving it would kill the fae.

“…I never realized this until now and I can’t believe that it took me this long or that I would come to love again after my first love, but I love Hazel. I may not know what she was going to say, but I…wish I could have told her that.” He uttered finally.

After a few moments pause to process everything that the captain told her, Emma spoke, “…Wow…that sounds like the two of you have lived a lifetime together. She sounds like she was quite the addition to your crew and an amazing woman. I’m sorry that you never got to tell her how you felt,” She placed her hand on Killian’s shoulder and met his gaze. “But by the display I saw in Granny’s when she popped in, I have a strong feeling that she felt the same towards you.” Her features showed a sympathetic towards Killian.

Their story was an epic one to say the least and a tragic one. He loved Hazel with all of himself, even if he hadn’t realized it. She couldn’t help, but feel envious and sad at the same time. Emma started to feel a pull towards Hook. Maybe it was caused by her wanting to help him cope with his grief of her loss a second time. Or maybe it was caused by the previous advances of the pirate captain before Hazel returned.

Killian had more than one way of coping with the feelings that stirred within him; grief, sadness, guilt, regret. He wanted to take it all back. He wanted to go back to the night he met Hazel on Pixie Hollow. He wanted to redo it all over again, to do it differently. So that she would be alive. He knew how futile that task would be. That there was no way that he could do such a thing.

His eyes flicked up to Emma’s and searched hers. His body leaned in slowly, moving on its own accord. This would not be the first time he allowed his drunkenness to control his actions. Nor would it be the last. His heart beat steadily in his chest as Emma followed his lead.

His liquored breath lapped and mixed with hers. He lifted his hand to her cheek to pull close as their lips brushed against one another. He was ready to distract himself and rid himself of the heartache he felt, even for a moment.

Before they kissed, the door to the captain’s quarters flung open. They hastily moved away from one another as none other than Rumplestiltskin came in. “Pan took Henry. We need to go to Neverland, quickly.”
